The best year yet: Jason's 2019 resolutions

Writer's picture: Jason HeckendornJason Heckendorn

For one reason or another, I’ve seldom been one for New Year’s resolutions. Maybe it’s been a lack of interest, sustainability, or changing life demands, but I’ve either never followed through or never bothered setting them at all. Considering the evident value of goal setting, this pattern has been bothersome to me.

In 2018, however, I experienced a year of constant review and introspection. I continually evaluated my every decision – good and bad – and completed a comprehensive audit on where my weak points are and why they exist. And there were a lot of them, too. For everything good that last year brought, there were just as many challenges for me. My diet and exercise regiments hit a wall towards the end of the year. I became complacent in my habits and lifestyle choices. I spent far too much time on social media and far too many dollars on meaningless things. Yet with the right mindset and game plan, these things (and others) can be positively affected and changed to achieve my optimal life balance.

Like everyone, I want 2019 (and every subsequent year) to be my best year, but I feel the need to be the best version of myself if I want to achieve that lofty vision. I’ve outlined a variety of goals below, broken down into five holistic categories. Some are general and somewhat vague, and some are very specific and clear; that is done intentionally. Ultimately, all of these goals are attainable, sustainable, and will lend themselves to a better, happier 2019. To be clear, achieving everything listed below would be a definite challenge – but impossible is nothing, right? Here’s to the best year yet:

  1. HEALTH: Maintain a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.

  • Go to the gym on a regular basis (2-3 times per week).

  • Emphasis on aerobic fitness.

  • Run a half marathon.

  • Expand cooking repertoire; eat in and cook more.

  • Get back to 175 lbs.

  • Continued focus on mental health.

  1. ADVENTURE: Do something new at least once per month.

  • Travel more regularly.

  • Plan to visit Europe again.

  • Adventure more with weekend trips.

  • Pursue a new hobby.

  • Witness more sunsets.

  1. COMMUNITY: Spread love to friends, family, and those around you.

  • Call one friend or family member (not local) at least once per week.

  • Spend more time volunteering.

  • Become more active within San Diego Sun Devils community.

  1. CAREER: Find more joy and challenges in your work.

  • Earn a promotion or new role.

  • Develop data science skills and seek new opportunities.

  • Review potential graduate programs; consider application and next steps.

  1. PERSONAL: Be a better version of yourself.

  • Waste less time on social media.

  • Budget more actively; be economical.

  • Read at least six books throughout the year.

  • Write more blog posts.
